Saving Lives Through Safer Tires

The BTSF Treadmobile exhibit travels to schools and community events in support of our mission of “saving lives through safer tires.”

A tire is the only thing between your vehicle and the road. Any flaw, in any tire, can spell disaster for you, your loved ones and even the people in the cars around you.

Be Tire Safe Foundation has worked with the Arizona legislature and the Governor to improve tire safety through legislation calling for unsafe used tires to be removed from circulation.

Are your tires safe? Here’s how to check.

Support tire safety advocacy by helping us pass new laws keeping unsafe tires off our highways.

BTSF MAKING A DIFFERENCE

We at Be Tire Safe believe that everyone can do their part to help make roads safer through proper tire maintenance and replacing tires when they are no longer safe to drive.

One of our founding goals was to pass legislation in Arizona prohibiting the sale of unsafe tires. This was accomplished with the signing into law of Arizona House Bill 2399 in 2017. This law requires that unsafe, unusable tires be treated as “waste tires” and removed from circulation.

But much still remains to be done to fulfill our mission of “saving lives through safer tires.”

Be tire safe! Just remember TREAD:

Tires should be replaced when the tread depth is less than 4/32 of an inch. If you insert a penny into a tread groove and can see Lincoln’s hairline, you will need to replace your tires soon.

To promote even wear, rotate your tires every 5,000 – 6000 miles or every 6 months and check with your service provider to see if the tires need to be balanced or aligned. Uneven wear is a sign of a faulty tire or, even worse, an indication that there is a mechanical problem with the car.

If there is less tread at the tire’s edge than in the middle, your tire needs to be replaced or rotated. This could be a sign that the tire has not been inflated properly with the recommended air pressure.

Keeping tires properly inflated is essential for safe driving. It also helps them last longer and provides better fuel economy. Recommended tire pressures are listed inside the driver’s door of your vehicle.

Tire sidewalls are stamped with a Department of Transportation (DOT) number, the last four digits of which show the week and year of manufacture. In extreme hot climates, tires should be replaced every four years, whether worn out or not.

PROMISE KEPT

In 2014, the truck currently displayed on our Treadmobile™ exhibit experienced a sudden tire failure at highway speed, causing it to roll over multiple times. The occupants suffered severe injuries, and one passenger was killed.

After their loss, the owners donated this truck to Be Tire Safe Foundation so that we could show others the importance of tire safety. You’ll see us out and about as we do our part to make Arizona roads safer.
